One of my girlfriends recently suggested a show called The Therapist on Viceland. It’s a show about a licensed therapist, Dr. Siri Sat Nam Singh sitting down with musicians and culture influencers creating a space of healing. Even with the camera’s rolling, Dr. Singh exudes an aura of authenticity and humility. Each episode meeting the individuals where they are and effortlessly guiding them to their own vulnerability.
What I love most about this show is Dr. Singh’s delicacy with addressing the wounds of the individuals he’s sitting down with. He presents as very wise, even-keeled, and very attune to the person sitting before him. He mentions that he will not boost himself to seem bigger than he is, but instead will choose a path of empathy, knowing that he’s a human being talking to another human being. It’s beautiful to watch as Dr. Singh meets each person where they are without judgement.
In the episode with rapper, Waka Flocka Flame, Dr. Singh works with him to discuss his feelings about the deaths of his two younger brothers. It was touching to see a man, especially a Black man express himself so freely and openly, even with the camera’s rolling. True to Waka’s nature he kept it real, even acknowledging his faults in his marriage with his wife Tammy. Dr. Siri Sam Nam reflects to Waka his “goat-like” nature, suggesting his ability to plant his feet anywhere with assurance and stability.
Each episode will make you want to sit across from Dr. Singh and have him guide you towards your own healing. If you haven’t watched the show already, I highly recommend you add it to your watchlist. You will not be disappointed. The show airs Monday nights at 10:30 PM on Viceland. Tonight, Dr. Singh will be sitting down with rapper, O.T. Genasis as he explores two-sides of his persona as a gun-totting rapper and father of an autistic child. You don’t want to miss it!
