From Mindless to Mindful: Detaching from the Chaos of the Mind

Affirm this truth: “I am calm.”

With all that’s going on with the collective awakening, I’ve been meditating on ways I can be of support to my community. The one thing that continues to be illuminated to me during this time is to remain calm amidst the storm.

Have you noticed whenever you try to quiet your mind, the voice inside kicks into overload becoming louder and louder?

Go ahead. Try it. Right now try to silence the voice in your head.

The one you’ve been using to read these words. Just stop.

How did that feel?

Working to free the mind from unhealthy thoughts patterns is not easy work.

Notice the amount of concentration and focus it requires to silence your mind.

Imagine trying this for 5, 10 or even 15 minutes.

The voice inside your head will kick up. Screaming for attention. Demanding it.

It wants to be in control of your life. In fact, the voice believes it’s in control.

That’s because for so long you’ve allowed this voice to narrate your life.

Keeping you from being fully present in the moment.

Sometimes this voice is your best friend, full of encouraging thoughts, motivation, and wisdom.

Then there are times this voice is self-destructive, hateful and pessimistic.

It invades your mind with negativity and brings with it feelings of fear, guilt, and doubt.

The same voice that encouraged you to start your own business or go back to school is now the same voice telling you, “You don’t deserve to be here.”

This voice is confusing, contradicting, and unreliable.

Most people identify with this voice so much that they believe it is who they are.

You are not the voice in your head. You are the one listening to this voice.

The quiet stillness that exists between your thoughts; that is you.

You can get to this stillness by choosing to let go of the attachment to your thoughts.

It is not about controlling your thoughts, but instead allowing them to flow through you.

You do not have to identify or connect with any of your thoughts. 

You can let go of every thought as it comes, instead of overthinking or becoming anxious, you can choose to simply be in the moment.

You can free yourself from your mind and begin to live fully aware and conscious of the present moment.

Allowing each moment to handle itself.
